Private Pilot Licence
At Moorabbin Flying Services (MFS), we have been training pilots to the Private Pilot Licence (PPL) and beyond for over 16 years. It is our guarantee to our customers that they receive the very best in flight training, and do so in the very best equipment. Our immaculate new fleet of Piper Training aircraft are the perfect addition to the high quality training we provide. There is simply no better platform in which you could begin your training in, to achieve your goals of the PPL.
To achieve a PPL the student pilot must undertake and pass our PPL training program which includes both practical flight training and flight theory subjects as specified by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). Before you can hold a PPL, the following must be completed as soon as possible prior to starting your training.
• Undertake a Trial Introductory Flight (TIF); You can get started flying an aircraft from day one
• Pass a medical assessment for a Class 2 Medical conducted by an approved CASA doctor;
• Fill out the paperwork for a Student Pilot’s Licence, Aviation Reference Number (ARN), and an Aviation Security Identity Card (ASIC).
THESE FORMS CAN BE FOUND ON OUR WEBSITE HERE AT CASA PILOT FORMS
From here the rest of our PPL syllabus is split up into 4 major areas which include:
o First Solo; Making your first ever flight all by yourself, remaining within the Moorabbin Airport Circuit.
o Training Area Solo; Making your first ever flight by yourself out to the Moorabbin Training Area and back.
o Achieving your Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL); Your first ever flight test of approximately 1 hour, that enables you to take passengers flying for the first time.
o Navigation Training; Approximately 10 navigation exercises comprising both dual and solo flying, to teach you the basics of pilot navigation, map reading, cross country flying techniques and the use of radio navigation aids.
From here, only TWO more steps…….
• Pass the PPL(A) Exam; (The A stands for AIRCRAFT, as opposed to HELICOPTER)
• Pass the PPL Flight Test.
Once you’ve successfully passed the PPL theory and flight tests, you will be issued with your Private Pilot’s Licence – Congratulations, the sky is now the limit!
Further Useful Information:
The average time taken to achieve the required standard to the PPL level is around 65 hours total training time. It is much more realistic to budget on the fact that your training will probably be somewhere around this time, rather than closer to the legal minimum requirement of 40 hours.
There is no formal education requirement to commence flying lessons; however you must be able to read, write and speak English.
There is no age restriction on when you can commence your flying lessons, but you must have reached 15 years of age before you can complete your first Solo flight. Furthermore, you must be 17 years old before you may hold a Private Pilot Licence.
As stated above, you must undergo a medical examination by an approved CASA medical examiner, which will grant you a Class 2 medical certificate. The Class 2 examination is basically a general physical check-up. All sorts of medical irregularities are permissible, provided that you are in generally good health. We recommend that you complete the medical early in your training so that it won’t delay later solo training sequences. People in wheelchairs hold pilot licences and colour blindness is usually acceptable after individual consultation. On completion of the medical examination, the results are sent to the CASA medical branch in Canberra for the issue of a Medical Certificate. The Medical Certificate is required as part of the application for a Student Pilot Licence. Click here for more information on medical requirements and approved practitioners.
