Embarking on a flyaway is one of aviation's most memorable and exciting experiences. Whether you’ve just gained your Private Pilot Licence and want to take some friends on the trip of a lifetime, or you are building up your command hours toward your Commercial Pilot Licence, flyaways are a great way to see Australia whilst gaining invaluable flying experience along the way.

At Moorabbin Flying Services (MFS), we support all our students who wish to plan a flyaway. Our experienced flight instructors have all undertaken various trips around Australia, and are always available to meet with students, in order to provide assistance and advice on all the challenges involved with a flyaway trip.

For students who haven’t yet attained their Private Pilot Licence, MFS offers a unique option for those who may wish to spread their wings a little further than Victoria during their flight training. By allowing them to pair up with another student of similar standard plus an Instructor, they are able undertake a larger navigation exercise which is used to simulate a mini-flyaway. By swapping students roughly half way enroute, a considerable distance can be covered (You could just about make it to Queensland!). At the end of the first day, the students and the Instructor spend a night away from home, before repeating the process to come home to Moorabbin the following day.

This type of mini-flyaway allows students to become familiar with manually refueling an aircraft using the MFS fuel cards, planning up the next day’s flight whilst not in the comfort of the classroom, and having to submit flight plans over the telephone, all whilst having an MFS Instructor there to assist if any problems arise. After undertaking these small navigation trips, our students are more aware of what’s involved on a larger flyway, and have been able to experience it first hand prior to attaining their full licence. Just another method we use, to produce mature pilots of the highest quality.
