Moorabbin Airport:Moorabbin Airport is the primary General Airport for the state of Victoria and it is contained within a 293 hectare site which is located 21 kilometres south east of the Melbourne Central Business District. The airport commenced flight operations in 1949, and today some 60 years later it remains the major centre in Victoria for flight training, air charter, aerial work and private flying. The airport is also the mjor hub for aircraft maintenance and aircraft sales for the southern Australian states. General Information:The Airport is owned by the Commonwealth Government and is leased and operated by the Moorabbin Airport Corporation (MAC) who have released the Moorabbin Airport Master Plan 2009 which outlines the future development objectives for the airport. In 1989 the airport's name was officially changed to Moorabbin (Harry Hawker) Airport in honour of one of Australia's most famous pioneer aviators who was born within a few kilometres of the airport. Harry Hawker was a famous test pilot before and during the First World War. He purchased the Sopwith Company and also created the Hawker Company, a name that endures today. Air Traffic Control:The airfield operates 5 sealed runways, the longest being 17 L / 35 R at 1335 metres. Please refer to the diagram for overview of airport layout. Air Traffic Control at Moorabbin Airport is provided by Air Services Australia. The airport has a Control Zone of 3nm radius from 0 - 2500 ft. The Tower operates between the hours of 0800 to 1900 (local). During Daylight Saving time the ATC service may extend until 2200. When ATC is available, the airport operates under the Australian GAAP procedures. The tower is not radar equipped, but has direct communication with Melbourne Jetport radar services. When ATC is not available, the Moorabbin Control Zone is reclassified as class G airspace, and becomes a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF). The airfield is available 24 hours a day, with lighting displayed continuously for Runways 13/31 and 17/35 during the hours of darkness. Moorabbin Airport has a NDB with an approved Instrument Approach Also available is the Moorabbin GNSS (RNAV) approach for runways 17L/35R.

It is highly recommended you understand the GAAP procedures used during Tower hours before attempting to land at Moorabbin. Moorabbin Air Museum:Moorabbin Air Museum is located at Moorabbin Airport and houses a DC.3, Viscount, Lockheed Hudson, Fairey Gannett, Beaufighter and several other historical aircraft and aviation memorabilia, the display is maintained by an excellent group of volunteers and aircraft restoration specialists. |
