Expected Costs and Planning Budgets

How much is all of this going to cost me?

You have probably heard that getting your pilot licence is "not cheap", but in fact, when you consider the amount of time involved, the quality of instruction, the relatively rare achievement of actually getting a licence and the freedom that the licence grants you, it is a great investment.

The cost per hour, or part thereof, is based on engine running time only.

The dual rate for training includes a qualified flight instructor. As part of this cost, each flight sequence includes a pre-flight and post-flight ground brief.

The solo rate is the basic hire of the aircraft including fuel, oil and landing fees.

An approximate guide to costs based on the minimum legally required hours is detailed below. Note the prices below are inclusive of GST. Students completing the 150 hour commercial syllabus are GST exempt.

Whilst it is possible that an average student could achieve the qualification at or close to the minimums, no guarantee is made or can be given that anyone will do so. This is due to the variations in skill, aptitude, dedication and other personal factors as well as the weather, and frequency of lessons, etc. Individual assessment and advice is always available upon request.

Progress in your flying training is achieved by reaching a required proficiency level, then you move on to the next training sequence.  Merely accumulating the minimum flying hours does not earn you your wings.  It's all about proficiency and safety.

How can I pay for this?

There are two methods of payment.  The first method, which is financially easier for most, is simply pay as you go - Visa, MasterCard and Bankcard are welcome.

The second option is to deposit money into an account with the company, which you can then "fly off" - essentially, this is like purchasing a "block" of lessons, which have been paid for in advance.

All flying must be paid for on the day of the flight so accordingly all accounts must be kept in credit at all times.

In order to provide you with quality training, at an affordable price, Moorabbin Flying Services is not in a position to offer credit accounts.

Whichever way you go, the first time you sit in an aircraft as pilot-in-command, you will know that it has been well worth it!

Please Note: Prices quoted are an estimate based on average training times and learning on a Piper Warrior.  Prices are correct at time of publication of this page.  Aircraft and instructor rates are subject to change without notice.  The correct rates can be verified by contacting us.

Due to individual abilities the above times and figures may vary significantly from student to student.  In addition there are theory course costs (optional), medical, log-book, navigation equipment, theory text books, headset, licence issuing fees, test fees etc.
