Moorabbin Flying Services regularly assists overseas pilots in converting their licences and obtaining Australian wings. If you hold a licence in another country the conversion to give you the freedom to fly in Australia is relatively easy.
Moorabbin Flying Services has helped pilots from New Zealand, USA, Britain, Canada, Italy, Germany, India, Malaysia, The Philippines, Japan and many more countries to obtain their Australian wings. There are two main ways in which we can assist you to gain your wings.
Depending on the length of your stay in Australia, you can pursue two different options:-
- Visitor's Licence;
- Full Licence Conversion
If you have:-
- a satisfactory knowledge of English;
- hold a current ICAO recognised Pilot's Licence and;
- hold a current ICAO recognised medical certificate
We will be able to assist in organising what is essentially a Certificate of Validation to fly in Australia.
These validations are issued in general as a Private Pilot's Licence for Day VFR operations. A validation for the Commercial Pilot's Licence is available, but will generally be endorsed Not For Hire Or Reward.
Pilots obtaining a validation to fly will require suitable briefings on local procedures and a practical check flight. Moorabbin Flying Services is well equipped to deal with all your needs and requirements in this area, seven days per week.
Validations are also available for Night VFR, Instrument Ratings, Agricultural Ratings and Instructor Ratings. Please contact us at Moorabbin Flying Services for comprehensive details.
Full
Licence Conversion
If you want to fly in Australia for more than three months, then a Full Licence Conversion is required.
Australian Pilot Licences are issued without an expiry date, but are conditional on the holder having a current Australian Class 2 (Private Pilot Licence) or Class 1 (Commercial Pilot Licence and Airline Transport Pilot Licence) Medical Certificate.
Generally, the following easy steps need to be completed, to convert to a full Australian Pilot Licence:
- You must complete and pass a medical examination with a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner in Australia. Alternatively, there are a number of doctors overseas who are approved by CASA to conduct these examinations. Click here to view the list of approved overseas practitioners.
- You must pass the Australian Air Law written examination appropriate to the licence that you are seeking.
- You must satisfy the practical aeronautical experience requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for the licence sought. This is generally the same as the ICAO recommendations.
- You must pass an Australian Flight Test for the licence you are seeking.
Moorabbin Flying Services can assist in all areas of these simple requirements. We are able to conduct you through all of the required steps with our in house training, testing and examination approvals. We are a one stop shop for all the overseas licence and training needs.

Once an Australian Permit has been granted on the basis of a foreign pilot licence, all applicants are required to undertake a simple check flight prior to being able to fly in Australia.
The purpose of this check flight is to check both the pilot's ability to fly the aircraft, as well as their understanding of Australian procedures and airspace structure. Moorabbin Flying Services has an approved Approved Authorised Test Officer (ATO) on staff (our Chief Flying Instructor).
